Thermals are absolute life-savers for those people performing a variety of sports in cold conditions. This might simply be mountain biking in winter, or indeed performing sports at altitude. Most commonly however thermals are used in snowy conditions when you need lots of layers to keep your core temperature up, even when you’re moving about. As no one really sees your thermals the designs are often pretty basic, but they do have a few things in common. Being a base layer they are often pretty lightweight and hug the body. This means you can easily layer on top of them without losing any mobility. They are made of fabric with good insulating qualities, that also tend to have “wicking” qualities which draw sweat away from the skin and out through the material. This means that you don’t have moisture against your skin and this reduces heat loss via conduction.

Whether you go for short sleeve or long sleeve tops, make sure you pick a trusted brand that have a good pedigree in sports.
