Snowboarding
When the summer comes to an end and the water gets too cold to venture into, and the ground gets too muddy to ride on, at least we can look to snowboarding to get use through the winter season with a smile on our face.
The earliest known snowboard was called a ‘Snufer’ and was initially just a toy for kids to play on in the snow. However, the speed and agility that one could achieve on a snurfer soon led to competitions being held and variations soon began to be developed in order to get the ‘edge’ over the competition. Jake Burton (founder of Burton Snowboards) was one of the first riders in the early competitions and one of the first to really develop the snowboard into something more commercially viable.
Snowboarding has continued to grow in popularity all over the world, and is not only seen as an alternative to skiing, but now also as a way of life and a culture in itself. The snowboarding market is massive, with literally thousands of brands competing for visibility and big sponsorship deals being forged each year. Because the sport requires a large amount of specialist clothing and accessories, there is a lot of money to be made by the big players.
