Surfing was notoriously first started in Hawaii and first reported in Captain Cooks journals after he visited the country on this expeditions. It is not known however how long the locals had been surfing before Cook witnessed them doing so, and it could indeed be one of the worlds earliest sports.

One of the major attractions of surfing is that it is a very naturalistic sport, which requires the participant to work with Mother Nature, rather than try to tame her. It takes a long time to learn the sport and become competent, but once you are the sport rewards you with harmonious exhilaration and bucket loads of fun.

Surfing also requires you to be incredibly fit. Not only do you need huge upper body strength and stamina to get you out over the waves and into the line-up, but you also need power to help you pop up into the standing position once you’ve caught a wave. Your cardiovascular fitness can’t be too shabby either, otherwise you won’t last long when the conditions are rough, and most likely someone will have to swim in and recue you...why isn’t so cool.
