Wakeboarding

In the beginning there was water-skiing. Then, after someone decided that sport was a little too tame and needed ‘cooling up’ a bit, wakeboarding was born!

The sport found real popularity in the 90’s and has continued to grow ever since, with more and more locations to practice the sport popping up all the time. Thankfully, there has been a lot of investment in cable-line wakeboard facilities in this country, meaning that you don’t know need to own or hire a speedboat in order to enjoy the sport. For those who have water-skied before, wakeboarding is surprisingly easy to pick up, and you’ll be performing some nice carves before too long. However, it’s one of those sports that really takes it out of you, so you’ll need to do lots of upper and lower body strengthening work if you want to remain upright for any length of time.

Wakeboarding is also a sport that provides a large amount of room for progression. Getting air off the wake is an achievement in itself, but you can go on to perform spins, grabs, and even flips when you get enough confidence. Although the water normally provides a soft landing if you bail, it can do damage if you’re travelling at speed, so you need to wear the right protective gear such as a wakeboard helmet. Also, it’s important that you pick the right wakeboard binding for your ability, otherwise you’re feet could stay attached to the board, when you really need them to release.
