Qualitative research is a process of conducting social science research. It is believed that humans are story-telling beings and the ontological assumption is that stories shape our realities and identities, that we live in, through and out of narratives, (Smith & Sparkes, in-press). This relates to de Vries, Blando, Southard and Bubeck’s (2001) concept of ‘social clocks.’ Central to this idea is the belief that individuals mark progress in terms of ‘on time’ or ‘off time’ through the various stages in their lives. ‘On time’ relates to a positive perception of meeting cultural expectations at a particular stage in life, whereas ‘off time’ relates to a negative perception of failing to meet cultural expectations at a specific point in life (Phoenix & Sparkes, 2008).
